promissory estoppel

"A legal theory which prevents a promisor who is sued for breach of contract from stating that no contract truly exists, alleging that no consideration exists to create the contract. In other words, the promisor is stopped from denying that he had a contractual duty to the promisee; avoids injustice to the promisee who relied on the promise made to him by the promisor."
